A Gift of Hope: Rice Mills for the Sarkegad Community

At Silence Softly Speaks we are honored to share the impact of your generosity. Through the support of Birmingham Public Schools, a village in Nepal has received a gift that has truly changed daily life.

Thanks to the generosity of Birmingham Public Schools, Silence Softly Speaks was able to fund and install four modern rice mills in Sarkegad, Nepal.

For years, villagers there relied on two traditional mills. One depended on the rainy season, working only when the Karnali River flowed strongly. The other was slow, physically demanding, and often unreliable. Families, especially women, were forced to walk long distances carrying heavy loads of grain, only to face long waits and exhausting labor.

With your support, everything has changed.

Today, four new rice mills serve the community. They are fast, efficient, and easy to use, saving time and reducing physical strain. For families, this means more hours in the day for children to study, for women to work or rest, and for households to enjoy relief from burdens they once carried.

As our contact in Nepal shared:

“With your generous support, we have successfully installed four modern mills. This has made daily life much easier for the entire community. The new mills save time, reduce physical strain, and bring real relief to households. Your contribution has truly transformed the way people live and will always be remembered with gratitude.”

The photos and videos below show the contrast between the old traditional mills and the newly installed modern mills. They tell a powerful story of resilience and renewal, made possible through compassion and generosity.

To Birmingham Public Schools and everyone who gave, thank you. You have not only provided mills, you have given dignity, relief, and hope for the future.
